The Convention Centre Dublin eliminates over 1,200 take away cups from the planet!

Throughout July, members of The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD) took part in the Plastic Free July challenge, a global movement to help to be a part of the solution to plastic pollution. As part of this challenge, The CCD replaced all compostable take away cups in their offices with reusable glass cups and crockery, eliminating an estimated 1,200 cups from the planet in just four Wednesdays throughout July.

After launching a permanent, plastic-free cash catering food offering in 2021, the team at The CCD went one step further by eliminating compostable cups for tea and coffee on one day a week for all employees. This initiative was introduced each Wednesday throughout July, coinciding with the venue’s current Meatless Wednesday offering. The venue offered all employees keep cups to use throughout the month, along with installing additional sinks to clean cups.

Members of The CCD took part in this challenge to support the venue’s initiative of eliminating all single use plastics by 2023. This challenge was a huge success and led to the permanent reduction of all disposable cups for employees.

Speaking about the challenge, Alan Gallagher, Director of Event Operations commented. “I am delighted to have taken part in the Plastic Free July challenge, refusing the use of single use plastics throughout the month, both at home and in the office. This was easily done and the support from the team was incredible. This is a great first step towards eliminating single use plastics from The CCD by 2023.

Alan added, “In July, some of our team also visited Thorntons Recycling’s plant to witness first-hand what happens to the recycling waste generated at The CCD. This was a great learning experience for the team and something we will all take back to the office and at home”.

As part of The CCD’s vision to become Ireland’s most sustainable venue and a leading expert in sustainable event delivery in Europe, the venue has committed to:

  1.     Carbon neutral by 2025
  2.     ISO20121 by 2021
  3.     Sustainable hospitality
  4.     Eliminate single use plastics by 2023
