Dublin - Oct. 18, 2011 - The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD), recognised as the first international carbon neutral convention centre, features a sustainable thermal ice-storage system that is reducing building cooling costs by an estimated 17 percent.

The Centre, which was opened in September 2010, features high-efficiency infrastructure systems, including the thermal ice-storage solution. These systems were selected specifically to help meet sustainability objectives and to create a reliable, comfortable and productive environment for occupants.

The CCD management team is committed to long-term sustainability in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization 14001 publication and is currently seeking accreditation.

In recognition of The CCD’s commitment to optimised building performance and sustainability, Trane, a leading global provider of indoor comfort systems and services and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, is presenting the organisation with its "Energy Efficiency Leader Award." The CCD is the first convention centre in the world to receive this award.

Details of the award presentation:

  • The CCD will be recognised at an award presentation that will take place on Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. on the level 5 foyer at The Convention Centre Dublin, Spencer Dock, North Wall Quay, Dublin 1.
  • Manlio Valdes, president of Trane and Thermo King in the Europe, Middle East, India and Africa region for Ingersoll Rand, will present the award to Paul Moore, building services contracts manager for The CCD.

"The CCD is truly committed to sustainability, and we are pleased that our building reflects this throughout while improving the bottom line,” said Moore. “The selected systems are good for the environment, offer a low life-cycle cost and help provide a comfortable environment for our clients, visitors and employees."

The systems are designed to address the business objectives stated by The Centre. This link represents a key component in The CCD's journey in maintaining a high performance building.

High performance buildings take a whole-building approach to performance while creating spaces that are reliable, safe, healthy and efficient. They meet specific standards for energy and water consumption, system reliability and uptime, environmental compliance, occupant comfort, and other factors. All standards are set to deliver established outcomes that help building owners and occupants achieve their business mission.

Customised Solutions Selected to Meet Sustainability Goals

The design team which was made up of the Office of Public Works, The CCD, the Construction Management Partnership and McCardle McSweeney Associates, selected building systems to reflect the commitment to sustainability at The CCD.

The ice storage thermal unit produces ice at night to provide air conditioning for the building during the day. This shifts electricity demand from more expensive on‑peak rates to off-peak, saving money and increasing the building's overall sustainability.

The building also features a highly-efficient heating and chilled-water system, which provides optimised energy and operational efficiency at a low life-cycle cost. The building includes 33 thermal heat wheels in the air handling units, which recover 70 percent of the energy from exhaust air for reuse in the building, further contributing to the building’s overall sustainability.

The CCD also does extensive recycling as part of its sustainability efforts with a goal to recycle 85 percent of building waste and reduce landfill waste to 15 percent. The Centre uses only green electrical energy to power the building and has incorporated integrated systems, including a building management system, an intelligent IP addressable lighting control system and a KONE E-Link™ lift management system to name but a few. These solutions all contribute to reducing overall energy consumption for The Centre.

The CCD, Ireland's first purpose-built convention centre, is located in Spencer Dock in the heart of Dublin city. The iconic building offers multi-functional, flexible rooms suitable for meetings, conferences and exhibitions of all shapes and sizes – from small corporate meetings to international congresses. The entire venue is finished to the highest specifications and incorporates the latest technology throughout.

The building was designed by Pritzker award-winning, Irish-born architect Kevin Roche and it was developed by Treasury Holdings as part of a Public Private Partnership with the Office of Public Works.
