Documentary on The CCD’s architect, Kevin Roche, to premiere at the IFI Documentary Festival

Kevin Roche The Quiet Architect

DUBLIN – 29 September 2017 – The world premiere of documentary ‘Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect’ will take place on 1 October at the closing night of the Irish Film Institute (IFI) Documentary Festival. The film showcases the remarkable achievements of the visionary architect who designed The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD) and over 300 other major buildings around the world.

The documentary, filmed by Wavelength Pictures, delves into the life and work of Irish-born Pritzker Prize winning architect Roche and features breathtaking footage of The CCD. Still working at age 95, and despite a lifetime of acclaimed work that includes 40 years designing new galleries for The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, he has no intention of ever retiring.

In addition to The CCD, the first Irish building Roche designed, some of his other best known work includes the revolutionary Oakland Museum of California, the Ford Foundation, the United Nations Plaza in Manhattan, and corporate campuses for Bouygues in Paris and Banco Santander in Madrid.

Since opening in 2010, The CCD, Ireland’s newest major state-owned public-access building, has hosted over 2 million visitors and has become the most iconic, landmark building on Dublin’s skyline. Speaking of the documentary, CCD Executive Chairman Dermod Dwyer who features in the film commented “This documentary is a fitting tribute to our collaborator and close friend Kevin Roche. Kevin and team delivered a spectacular award-winning, world class, fit-for-purpose design – a fitting stage where Ireland now proudly hosts fantastic international state visits, conferences and events.”

The documentary’s Director, Irish filmmaker and University College Dublin (UCD) architecture graduate, Mark Noonan, added “Roche’s ability to pierce the skin of architectural theory allows him to draw deep insights into his life and singular architectural process. We’ve strived to photograph his buildings in a cinematic style that brings the spectacular nature of their size and beauty to the big screen and allows the audience immerse themselves in architecture they might never get a chance to visit."

Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect will open to the public at the Irish Film Institute (IFI) on 13 October.
