The Convention Centre Dublin to Host One Young World 2014
DUBLIN – 13 June 2013 – The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD) has been chosen as the venue for the One Young World Summit in October 2014. Dublin fought off intense competition from Hong Kong and Edinburgh to become the host city for the high-profile global event, which comes to Ireland for the first time since its inception in 2009.
Outside of the Olympic Games, no other youth event brings together more delegates from more countries for a single event. Up to 2,000 delegates aged between 18 and 30 from over 180 countries will travel to Dublin to debate and provide solutions on pressing global issues. Discussions will revolve around a number of key areas including education, human rights, health, global business, sustainable development, leadership and governance.
After each Summit, the One Young World Ambassadors continue to work on the initiatives discussed to create positive change on a global level. There are currently 130 projects involving 100 countries in action, and to date, almost four million people have been directly impacted by the work of One Young World Ambassadors.
Dublin Lord Mayor Naoise Ó Muirísaid of the win “These young people are our future and hosting such a significant and inspiring summit is of key importance, not only for now but for the future”. A line-up of high-profile Counsellors that span a range of political, business, religious and popular culture backgrounds, will help ‘guide’ the event’s proceedings. Past Counsellors include Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, HKH Prince Haakon of Norway, Kofi Annan, Bob Geldof, Jamie Oliver and Joss Stone.
Fáilte Ireland estimates that the event is worth €3m to the Irish economy, and comments “with over 40% of the population under 30 years old, Dublin is teeming with youth, overflowing with energy and is the ideal destination for this event”.
